"
The East Prospect of Birmingham " engraved by J.Harris after a picture
by William Westley, dated in old pen 1722 upper right. Extremely rare early
panoramic view of Birmingham, published as one of a pair along with a
West Prospect. Very little information is available about this print. I was
able to locate one illustration of here - on
the VirtualBrum.co.uk website but the print illustrated differs in that
the text lower left and right is missing, also it is noted as being published
in 1731, making the date of 1722 unlikely. On the print offered here there is a brief
description of Birmingham lower left and lower right is a key to 17 notable
locations marked on the image.
Faults - the print has been
trimmed to the plate mark and laid down on canvas for many years, it is loosely
stretchered onto a frame. Click here
to see the reverse of the canvas and stretcher. It has also been varnished and the varnish has
now discoloured to a dark brown. It is complete and has no other damage apart
from a small tear (about 3 cms without loss)
in the engraved area and three small raised areas possibly caused by old paint
on the back of the canvas, now removed.
* Please note - all the
images of this print were taken with a digital camera so are not very clear.*
Size
81 x 42 cms (34 x 16.25 inches.) Ref E821. Price GBP 200 (Plus post at cost price.)
The
print does come with a simple Victorian frame and glass, these are not suitable
for sending in the post, but can be supplied free if the print is collected
or delivered.
